Weekly 3 - January 18th, 2021

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

Here are the three movies that I watched this week that I found most interesting to share:

Relic (2020)

Another 2020 movie with great performances by all three of the main actresses. Set in a beautiful house in the Australian bush, Kay goes to her mother’s house after repeatedly trying to get in contact with her with no luck. Kay knows her mother is getting old and starting to forget things, so she has reasons to be worried. She arrives at the house with her daughter Sam, only to find that her mom, Edna, is missing. After a couple of days, Edna shows up home not remembering where she’s been and acting very strange. There’s something that followed her back, something that’s now inside the house, something dark.

Lots of metaphors in this movie, all beautifully displayed. The topic of Relic is the pain and grief experienced when you slowly lose a loved one to dementia. Although it’s not a hardcore horror movie, Relic is a beautiful and powerful piece of work; it’s definitely worth a watch.

Rogue (2020)

This is also a movie that came out in 2020. Unlike the other ones from this post, though, this one really sucked. I’m the only one to blame for not being able to say no to “Megan Fox vs. wild lions”. After rescuing 3 girls from a human trafficking ring somewhere in Africa, Sam O’Hara (Megan Fox) and her paramilitary crew of absurdly bad boys are stranded in the African grassland, having to face the angry human traffickers and the local predatory fauna.

This could be a cool plot if the dialogues weren’t so bad (not so bad that they’re actually good, no), the special effects so terrible and ALL the characters so annoying. If you’re going to make a creature feature, maybe don’t spend all your money hiring Megan Fox for the lead role and actually invest some time and money in creating good, or at least decent, CGI. The film is incredibly shallow and poorly made, even for my standards. There’s some bloody violent moments, but Rogue is not worth a watch.

Run (2020)

This one could’ve been included in My Top Movies of 2020 post, but didn't make the cut because I considered it more thriller than horror. Run shows us a homeschooled girl, Chloe, who lives with her mom (who is her teacher) in a beautiful house. Chloe is on a wheelchair and takes a bunch of medication for different illnesses since she was born. As the time to finally leave home and go to college draws near, she begins to notice something is very wrong with her mom.

Although I found the plot a bit predictable, I enjoyed the performances of Kiera Allen (Chloe) and Sarah Paulson (the mom) a lot. I think there is a very good build up of tension, I was on the edge of my seat watching Chloe struggling to overcome everything she has to face in the movie. But apart from the very last scene, which was fun, I found the ending felt a bit flat. What happens in Run is still very messed up, don’t get me wrong, I just think they could’ve pushed it a bit more to make it less obvious to the viewer.
